The ECO-harvesting fishing method uses a continuous trawl system protected by a fine mesh net. The net prevents anything larger than krill from being caught in it. Underwater cameras constantly monitor the system.

Instead of pulling the net out of the water to bring the catch on board, it is attached to a conveyance hose at the end of the net, which remains submerged throughout the process.

A constant flow of water flows through the hose, leading the live krill directly into the ship.

On the ship, the live krill is converted into krill oil, ensuring a much higher quality that is also much fresher than fish oil.

In 1980, the Antarctic organization CCAMLR was founded based on an international convention aimed at monitoring and conserving marine life around Antarctica. Since then, the catch of krill oil has been regulated as a precautionary measure to ensure that the ecosystem around Antarctica always remains sustainable.

CCAMLR thus regulates the krill fishery from threshold values, ensuring that there is always a healthy, breeding stock of krill and enough krill for the predators (for example, whales and penguins) that live on krill.

This means that the ecosystem is not affected, and there is no overfishing of krill. From a krill stock of 60 million tons biomass, CCAMLR has set the limit for catch to 1% per year.

To assess what level of catch is sustainable, researchers use computer models that simulate krill populations based on various equations and use these data to predict what will happen to the populations at different levels of krill fishing.
